For a once-in-a-lifetime living look at nature, come along on the bird-watching safari aboard the 65-foot vessel Havsula. The tour leaves from Gjesvær for the nature reserve Gjesværstappan, 15 km west of the Nordkapp cliff. Landing on the islands is not allowed, but from the boat one can observe Finnmark's largest groupings of puffins and plenty of kittiwakes. The puffins, easily recognisable by their colourfull bill, nest in holes in the grassy hills. The nesting period, from 1 April to 15 August, teems with life in the air and on land. Mighty sea eagles can be seen hovering overhead as they hunt for prey. Common guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skua, sea horses, Brunnich's guillemots and the big gannet are also part of the flourishing bird life at Gjesværstappan. In the fall, you may be fortunate enough to spot the smallest marine bird in Europe, the stormy petrel.
