Saltstraumen
The difference between high tide and low tide in North Norway is generally several metres with regard to water level. In a number of small narrows and straits a phenomenon called «maelstrom» occurs while immense volumes of water are trying to push their way from one fjord into another - or between the outer ocean and inner fjordbasins.
Among these maelstroms that of Saltstraumen is by far the strongest and most celebrated one, about 33 km. from the centre of Bodų. This natural phenomenon has at all time stirred the imagination of seafaring people and has provided nourishment for numerous legends.
Saltstraumen is some 3 kilometres long and fairly narrow, only about 150 metres wide, between the inner Skjelstad fjord and the outer Saltenfjorden, making up the final outlet to the ocean south of Bodų. In the course of 6 hours between 33.800 and 82.700 billion gallons of water are pressed through this narrow strait at a rate of about 20 knots pr hour.
The total amount of water as well as the speed of the current may vary according to the tiders. The maelstrom is at its strongest when the moon is new or full. Frequent west and south-west winds help push masses of water through the strait.
Saltstraumen is often dangerous, in particular when the tide is in. Then big whirls and ever-ghanging currents develop and cause great danger to those who might attempt to force die current. Some of die whirl-pools, or «cauldrons» as they are called, are claimed to be bottomless.
When the water is whirling round, the air is set in motion, thus greating a strange yelling sound. As the water gradually levels out, the speed of the current slows down and eventually the surface becomes calm. At this point boats can pass dirough the strait quite safely.
On either side of the strait there is a signal station. A red ball during daytime and a red light at dark indicate that the current is not passable. Two red balls or two red lanterns are a signal for cargo boats and odiers to go through. In the past the local passangers steamers were scheduled after the calmer periods of the current. When the tide is in, the current brings along an enormous amount of bait and big stioals of fish, such as coalfish, cod, lump fish, halibut and salmon.
The Saltstraumen area provides an ideal recreation ground for tourists from crowded cities. Heie you can try your fishing luck while you are viewing the rushing tidal currents - a magical experience
