Huelgoat, Finistere, Brittany, France
The small town of Huelgoat is a 5 minute drive away and here there are two supermarkets and a selection of shops including a butcher, two boulangeries (with patisseries to die for!), creperies and a Maison de la presse which sells English newspapers should you wiish to take a glimpse back into reality during your stay. There are two banks with ATM's and a Post office. Huelgoat is a pretty town built around a square which is home to the Thursday market which offers a wide range of locally produced food. Several bars surround the square where a pleasant hour can be spent watching the world pass by with a coffee or something stronger!! There is a large lake and the surroundings are famous for the giant granite boulders and ancient woodlands. The forest next to the town is said to be where King Arthur's treasure is buried. A rambling network of trails take walkers past caves, menhirs, long abandoned lead and silver mines and unusual geological formations which include the precariously named Roche Tremblante. Maps and leaflets showing these walks are available from the tourist office in the town. The area is popular with both walkers and cyclists. There is also a centre for local honey, a public open air swimming pool and tennis courts and an equestrian centre providing hacks through the forest. Periodically, art and equestrian events are held in the town.
